Speeding continues to be one of the main causes of serious road accidents in Portugal, whether due to the reduction in the driver's reaction time to an unforeseen event or the worsening of its consequences, as a result of the greater violence of the collision, the GNR indicated today in a statement.

Excessive speed is also the most common offence in all European countries and the main cause of death on the roads throughout Europe, adds the GNR, which last year controlled 13,151,582 vehicles and recorded 9,644 speeding.

With the operation that begins today and runs until 13 April, the GNR also intends to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of adopting safer behaviours, “with a view to promoting road safety and safeguarding human lives”.

This operation takes place within the scope of the European Traffic Police Network (RoadPol), an organisation that brings together traffic police forces in Europe and aims to improve road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.

In the note, the GNR also informs that an intensive speed control action is planned for Wednesday for 24 consecutive hours (ROADPOL - Speed Marathon), to be carried out simultaneously by all Member States.
