In a note, the authorities involved explain that these actions are part of the summer campaign of the “Health Promotion Project”, launched in July 2024, which aims to train police officers to share good health practices among the population.
In the actions that are now beginning, considering the high temperatures felt in mainland Portugal, the focus will be need for hydration for all ages, with a special focus on the elderly population belonging to risk groups.
The project aims to reach all regions of the country, promoting “a preventive health culture in proximity to communities”.
In view of the heat wave, the DGS emphasizes the importance of intensifying this joint work, taking advantage of the GNR's proximity to the community to facilitate the population's adherence to good health practices, promoting health literacy, and allowing citizens to make more informed decisions, in addition to reducing social isolation.
To develop this campaign, GNR military personnel received training provided by the DGS, focusing on the physiological impact of heat, communication strategies and behavioral activation, as well as preventive measures to be adopted during this seasonal period.
