Considering the ongoing incidents along the coastal stretch between Praia de Albandeira and Praia de Benagil — including traffic congestion, chaotic parking, inappropriate use of fragile areas like cliffs, minor accidents, and overcrowded beaches — the Municipality of Lagoa has been voicing increasing concern about the potential negative consequences for both the municipality and the wider Algarve region.

To find concrete solutions to be implemented, the Mayor of Lagoa, Luís Encarnação, recently called an urgent meeting, held on June 18, 2025, with the main competent entities, with the presence of the Port Authority of Portimão, CCDR Algarve, GNR, ARH, RTA and the Municipal Services.

“The meeting’s primary goal was to hear each entity’s perspective on the current challenges, collect input for medium- and long-term structural solutions, and, most urgently, identify practical measures that can still be implemented during this summer season in a coordinated and effective way. It is important to make it clear that the issues in this coastal area are not solely Lagoa’s responsibility, but a shared concern that requires joint action from all entities involved”, Lagoa council stated.

The City of Lagoa reiterates its commitment to promoting sustainable and safe management of the coastal strip, safeguarding environmental quality, the safety of residents and visitors, as well as the tourist image of the region.

The city government will continue to work closely with all entities involved, with the conviction that only through cooperation will it be possible to respond effectively to the growing pressure on this sensitive and valuable territory.
