The shows, which feature "unique arrangements by award-winning American jazz musician and composer" John Beasley, are scheduled for November 28th in Lisbon at Campo Pequeno and December 19th in Porto at Super Bock Arena – Pavilhão Rosa Mota, according to the concert promoter.
In the shows, Rui Veloso will revisit "the greatest hits of his career," to which the GNR Symphonic Band "promises to add a new dimension, with new arrangements, carefully prepared for these unique performances."
Rui Veloso, in a long-standing partnership with lyricist Carlos Tê, has created several songs that are easily recognizable to the public in Portuguese pop rock. The first dates back to the 1980s, when, at the age of 23, he released the album "Ar de Rock."
The musician, a self-taught guitarist, was born in Lisbon in 1957 and has lived there since childhood, but it was in the capital that he launched his musical career. The story, often told, claims that it was Rui Veloso's mother who, in 1979, took a demo of songs in English and Portuguese to the publisher Valentim de Carvalho.
It was the Portuguese-language songs that appealed to the label, and the following year, 1980, the album "Ar de Rock" was released, featuring musicians Zé Nabo and Ramon Galarza, and featuring the songs "Chico Fininho," "Rapariguinha do Shopping," and "Sei de uma Camponesa."
In 2010, when he celebrated his 30th anniversary, Rui Veloso told the Lusa news agency how effortlessly he composed melodies. "I composed 'Ar de Rock' on my way to Lisbon, during the trip. I stopped, wrote two or three songs, for example, 'Sei de uma Camponesa' and 'Saiu para a rua.'"
After "Ar de Rock," which marked the consolidation of Portuguese rock in the 1980s, along with albums by bands such as Xutos & Pontapés, UHF, and Rádio Macau, Rui Veloso released other successful albums such as "Guardador de Margens" (1983), "Mingos & Os Samurais" (1990), and "Lado Lunar" (1995).
A Commander of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, Rui Veloso has played with musicians such as B.B. King, was a member of Rio Grande and Cabeças no Ar, and released Azeitonas.
Tickets for the concerts in Lisbon and Porto, priced between €25 and €75, are on sale starting today.
