This discovery marks the first time that such accurate dates have been assigned to any part of the complex, which could be the oldest site of its kind in Europe.

Carnac was originally excavated in the 19th century, but the rarity of organic materials such as charcoal – used for carbon dating – further hampered efforts to establish chronology.
