"Mercadona will open in Vale Sepal, Leiria, at Avenida Francisco Rodrigues Lobo, No. 132, on September 11. This new opening represents an important step in strengthening Mercadona's presence in the municipality, bringing it even closer to its customers".

The company revealed that "this new supermarket will generate approximately 90 new, stable, high-quality jobs, with permanent contracts from day one, thus contributing to the creation of local jobs," according to a report by NM.

According to Mercadona, the new store "will have a sales area of approximately 1,900 m2, with wide aisles that allow for comfortable shopping, divided into the Delicatessen, Fishmonger's, Pastry and Bakery, Perfumery, Butcher's, Fruit and Vegetables, and Ready-to-Eat sections, similar in every way to the existing store near Parque Verde."

"The opening of this new supermarket, which will be Mercadona's second in the municipality and its third in the Leiria district, reflects the company's continued national expansion plan," it further stated.

Mercadona arrives in Lisbon this year

The expansion plan already announced by the Spanish brand "confirms that Mercadona will arrive in Lisbon in 2025, where it plans to open two stores. One of the stores, in Alta de Lisboa, will also house a new corporate office, complementing the one in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the company has its headquarters in Portugal. The second store will be located in Quinta do Lambert, in Lumiar".

To date, Mercadona has 60 open stores and two logistics centres operating in Póvoa de Varzim and Almeirim. With the openings planned for this year, it will end the year with 70 stores nationwide.

Having been in Portugal for five years, Mercadona reveals that it has created 7,000 jobs, "through permanent contracts from day one and attractive salaries."

"In 2024, Mercadona made a total investment of 219 million euros in Portugal, achieved a sales volume of 1.778 billion euros, and contributed 237 million euros in taxes through the Portuguese company Irmãdona Supermercados, headquartered in Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto)," the same statement reads.

For 2025, the company plans to invest more than €157 million and open 10 new stores.
